Marquetalia's dawn. La Base farm, 2018.

Marquetalia

This project is about the continuous wait in which peasants victims of violence live since the peace agreements between the Colombian government and the FARC was signed in 2016. They are two installations based on the landscape of Marquetalia, FARC's birthplace. They are passable scenery where the long night represents the dark past of the armed conflict and the continuous dawn symbolizes the endless wait in which the peasants live.

Both installations emerge from my interest in know the current condition of the place where the FARC was born. I traveled to Marquetalia during 2018’s second half. The village is located in south of Tolima, in the Gaitania district. To get there from Planadas I must cross mountains with uncovered roads for approximately 10 hours by jeep and horseback. That experience let me to understand the difficulty that Marquetalia’s inhabitants live repeating the same route to market their agricultural products or access health and education services. During the travel I stayed at the Las Brisas or La Base farm, where there are trenches and tunnels built since 1964. There lives a couple of teenagers who decided to live in the countryside, firmly believing that there they could forge a better future for their two children. When speaking with them, I realized that their lives have had positive changes since the Agreement was signed; however, they consider that this rebirth has been slowed down by the lack of interest of the Colombian State, which has hindered economic development and Social of your region.

Abstract

Through this installation the viewers can see the Sky vault from Marquetalia through a light installation while mountains printed on curtains are hinted at the horizon. Inside the room there are a series of veils hanging from the ceiling, printed with images of pieces of some aircraft that were scattered in the landscape after years of combat. The images levitate like ghost in space being illuminated sequentially every 10 minutes. Each time a photograph is illuminated, a peasant's story is reproduced telling how his life was before the Agreement. There are 5 objects and 50 stories repeating in a loop.

Abstract

This installation consists of a series of translucent veils sublimated with 600 photographs of the Marquetalia landscape. It is a ghostly and labyrinthine space where a system of mechanical rollers is installed on the roof to reproduce subtle displacements in some veils according to the progress of dawn. Behind these are programmed lights that interact with these movements. The sequence is rewound every 10 minutes generating a stunning feeling due to the rapid movement of the rollers. During sunrise the spectator can hear the river Támara and the awakening of the animals. At the end of each reversal of the sequence, the audience listens to one of the 50 farmers in the region express their demands to the Colombian State for the development of their region.
